I have never really been a New Year resolution kind of guy. The way I look at it is, if it is really important to you, you don’t need some “magic” date to get started. You should start right now. However, I do know that some people need a date, and need somewhere to start. So, even though it doesn’t really work or matter to me, if it takes a new years resolution for you to get started, then use it and make it work for you.
Here are some tips to get your fitness-New Year off on the right start.
· Make a REAL commitment ASAP- While all of this “motivation” is flowing through your body and mind, make your commitment now. Sign up for a large block of training sessions, purchase that gym membership, sign up for the local boot camp, etc… whatever it is, do it now while you are feeling all warm and fuzzy and motivated. After you start back to work for a few days, those motivating feelings will start to go away. Once you really commit to doing what you need to do, you will be more likely to actually do it.
· Set Goals – I know, I know. This is the most obvious thing everyone says each year and you have heard it all before. Well, if you still haven’t set your 2010 goals, then you obviously need to hear it again. Set all of your goals ASAP and make sure you leave nothing out. Write down everything you want to accomplish.
· Divide your goals into quarters - Once you have your goals set, divide them up into quarters for the year. Quarter 1 will be from January-March. Quarter 2 from April – June, Quarter 3 from July – September, and quarter 4 from October-December. By doing this, you will be able to set shorter term goals which will be more realistic and much more exciting. Why? Because they are right around the bend. For example: Your goal might be to lose 60 lbs for the year. That is a huge goal that seems far off and maybe a little impossible. So what you would do is break that goal down into quarters. Quarter 1 might be; “Lose 15 pounds.” Much more realistic and doable. Do that for all of your goals and you will have instant momentum.
· Start ASAP- As I said, momentum is on your side now. Get started right away. Go to the gym today or at the latest, tomorrow. Get started. Pack your bag the night before, put it in your planner and go.
· Ask for help- if you don’t know where to start, get help. Hire a trainer, surf the net, buy a program, but whatever you do, get started. I will list some great online programs that have helped many of my friends, clients and family over the years. If you don’t know where to start, get one of these programs. They are excellent. Also, this is another form of commitment. When you lay down your hard earned money, you are much more likely to stick with the program.
If you are not satisfied with where you are now, and your 2009 didn’t go the way you want it to, you can start all over now.
