Get to vs. Have to

Occasionally I get to work with someone that thinks training is an absolute privilege. Most of my clients like to train, but not so many see their training and, ability to train as a privilege.

I have worked with talented athletes, extremely motivated fat loss clients, and others that did what it took to reach their goals.

They didn’t always like it, but they got it done.

On the flip side, I have worked with people that absolutely hated training, hated coming to the gym and watched the clock the entire session…waiting until the torture was over.

Months ago, I had the chance to work with a man with multiple sclerosis. He was in a wheel chair and could not walk on his own without assistance.

I remember seeing the excitement in his eyes, every time he came to the gym. Not because he loved to get up early and train, more so because he saw it as a privilege to be able to stand, walk, exercise and improve.

Maybe it took a circumstance like his, to see his training in a different light. Maybe he just didn’t take things like walking on his own, performing things like squats, and lifting weights for granted.

Athletes get the same look as this man did when they return from an injury that sidelined them for a long time. They realize just how special the ability to play and practice is to them. They are happy they “get to.”

The “Get to” Mind set

I wish more people would have the “get to” mindset. I know I need to work on my own mindset when it comes to things in life.

When you “have to” do something, it already carries a weight before you even start. Chances are, you won’t enjoy it too much. When you “get to” do something, like workout, or train for something, it becomes enjoyable and you are going to reach your goal much faster.

Before you start your next training or workout session, try to think about the people that do not “get to” because they cant. Think about how you do “get to” do exercise, train and reach your goals. It just might change you entire perspective on things and your life.

I used to consider going to the gym a have to, but this summer I started to have lower back pains, and the doctors said that my discs at L4-L5, L5-S1, are bulged. I am happy when I do not feel pain as I can go to the gym. I always tell to my friends: be grateful that you can do this, as I would do anything to be able to lift without having pains the following day again
