Getting “in the Mood” Finding your WANT
Posted on 12. Jan, 2009 by Keith Scott in Motivation
Many “resolutions” have been made, but my bet is that few have been followed at this point. Or…some have been started, but my bet is that few will be continued.
I get emails and questions all of the time about which program people should follow to reach their fitness goals. Or, which diet should be used to try to lose weight? Most of the questions are “how” questions.
To be honest, the “how” is everywhere. The internet makes it easy. Even with the bad information that is out there, there is more than enough “good” information around and it is right at your fingertips any time you want to learn.
What is missing with most people is “the want.” You have to want to do something about your situation. If you are in the mood, you will start your training program. If you are in the mood, you will follow your diet. If you are in the mood, you will find the how and just do it.
The people that have the most success in reaching their fitness needs or goals, usually just do it. They do not dabble in the details, and they don’t wait around until they find that magic program that is just waiting for them out there. They just get to work and do it. They, have found the “want” and they get in the mood.
Sounds simplistic doesn’t it? That is because it is.
I worked with a client once that wasn’t really doing the right things all of the time. She worked out relentlessly, all of the time. Sometimes doing good stuff, sometimes doing what some would consider the “wrong” thing, but the thing was…she just did it. She had the “want” and she reached her goals. This person lost huge amounts of weight, gained a lot of muscle, and transformed her body faster than anyone I ever worked with. If she couldn’t train with me, she just trained on her own. Again, the want drove her to success.
I get a little tired of hearing “I don’t know what to do!” Information is vital, and correct information is important, but with that said, the desire to do it, is the most important thing.
If you are stuck in getting things done, and find yourself “waiting” for that perfect program, or the “right” diet, find your desire, find your “want” and get in the mood to just get going. The program will find you.
If you set goals, or resolutions, momentum is the greatest thing you will have. Find it and use it.
Being in the mood to get it done is just a simple mind shift.
If you are still having trouble finding your “want” here are some quick suggestions:
- Hire a trainer
- Buy a good program online. You can download them instantly and start your program today. Here are some of my recommendations:
- Set deadlines for getting started.
- Do something today. Anything, just get started. Build momentum.

Keith – Great post. I could not find the want for 20 years until my Dr. said I better DO something or I wasn’t going to be around to want or do anything. People ask me what am I doing and I tell them find something you like or at least like enough and get to it. Thanks again!

Great post Keith. Back in April I couldn’t run a mile without stopping. 7 months later I ran 26. Sometimes you just have to get out there and do it. Technique will come, but you have to start with desire. Very inspiring. Thanks.

Rob,
Thanks. That was my point. Sometimes you can just over analyze again and again, and that causes people NOT to act. When in doubt, just get out there and do it. Right or wrong its probably better than doing nothing at all.
