Giving Up

It is always sad for me to watch people give up on themselves. I get excited when I see people come into the gym with new goals and aspirations about their body and overall health…motivation is at an all time high and these people start training with a purpose. After months of hard training, goals are within reach and people are seeing results.
It is never easy. Reaching your fitness goals takes a lot of time, commitment and personal sacrifice. With the busy schedules and hectic lifestyles, only the strong survive. The biggest mistake that people make is thinking that getting into great shape is a short-term deal. It’s not! It is a lifestyle and something that needs to be done for the long term. The mentality of thinking it is a short-term commitment is a critical mistake that can almost always lead to people giving up on their mission.
Losing unwanted weight, putting on needed muscle, and getting healthy takes more time than people think. There are always quick fixes, but those never really last without continuing to train, eat well, and do what it takes to maintain.
The road is not easy. I work with people everyday that have made tremendous personal sacrifices in their work environment and with friends and family. Are they selfish? I don’t think so. These people are tremendously committed to themselves and there is nothing wrong with that. The sad thing is when people start, progress, see results and let the difficulties get to them. Usually these people find excuses and other “reasons” to quit. They quit on themselves and quitting on yourself is probably the worst thing you can ever do in life, in my opinion. You will always be able to find “reasons” why you cannot commit to yourself. I hear them all of the time. There are always things that will pop up in life to distract you from breaking down walls, and reaching your goals. The key is to never give up. Ever!
Just when you are thinking you cannot do it anymore, or maybe you think you just don’t have the time…that is when you need to step up and find a way. People will always find problems and excuses, but the challenge is to find solutions.
Here is the real deal; I have watched countless people start their fitness mission, make huge strides, break through walls, and inch very close to their goal, and then…for whatever reason, they quit. Weight is gained back again, muscle is lost and they are worse off then when they started. These people rarely EVER get started again. The mental beat-down that occurs from this scenario is more than most people can take. They will see this as a mountain they cant climb and just don’t want to climb ever again. The key is to never stop. The key is to find a way to keep going. The key is to never give up on yourself. It is much harder to get started the second time around after all you accomplished the first time is gone.
Once you start the process, you are locked in. This doesn’t mean you have to be hard core everyday for the rest of your life. It means you just have to find a way to keep going…eating right, moving more, and training enough so you never stop.
I have little pity for people that quit on themselves. I have worked with and currently train cancer survivors that have battled for their lives and never gave up. Through it all, they fight a new battle of health and fitness. They are winning. They have given up much to reach their goals, but they continue on towards their new victory.
I think it all comes down to self-worth. Those that have a good amount of self-worth, battle on…through it all. Those that don’t usually quit. Their own health and goals are not as important because in the end, they just don’t care about themselves. The irony of this is that working on yourself through fitness, is one of the best ways to improve your self-worth.
What I hope people remember is that it is not selfish to take care of you. It is not a bad thing to sacrifice for your health. The more worth you have in yourself, the more you can help those around you anyway. Having a good self-worth and taking care of you is never a bad thing. What is bad is giving up on you. Don’t be that person. Find a way.

Good thoughts. To quote Ralph Waldo Emerson:
“What lies behind us and what lies ahead of us are tiny matters to what lies within us”.
