Post-Exercise Recovery

Posted on 07. Oct, 2008 by in Back to Health, Fitness

An important aspect of fitness that many people skip is recovery.

I work with athletes, and non-athletes everyday that push hard, train to exhaustion and do all of the right things, but many skip a step that is vital to their strength gains, fat loss, performance, and physical health…recovery.

Recovery is vital if you want to be healthy and reach your fitness goals.

Check out this quick video where I talk about recovery and some things you can do to boost your recovery and stay healthy.

Would low intensity cardio or low intensity strength circuits fall in with the three modalities you mentioned? Just curious on your take, as I’ve heard some experts recommend this.

I like that you mentioned the heat though – gives you an excuse to sit in the hot tub!

    Doug,

Yes! If done correctly, low intensity movement is a great way to recover. I like prescribing walks, very low intensity circuits, biking, etc… the key is to keep is low with the goal being recovery, not a cardio or training effect.

    Thanks for the comment

Great – thanks a ton Keith. I actually had a client ask me why we stretch after we finished our session yesterday. Having this post clear in my head,I had nice quick and decisive response :)

You talk about foam rolling in this video. Are you saying do the foam rolling after a work out because I’ve always heard it’s something you should do before your work out accompanied with some dynamic stretching.

Yes. I have people do it before and after their workouts. Everyone is different, but most people will do well by doing it after they train.

I do all of my dynamic stretching before, and do static stretching and soft tissue work after.
