Taking care of YOU…and not being ‘Stupid’

Some people know how to push the limits. To dominate in the gym or weight room, you need to push harder and further then you ever have before. Each time out needs to be one of your best.
However, many people also tend to abuse themselves and continue to do stupid things…over and over again. Injuries, pain and missed workouts become the norm. Instead of making gains in strength or losing that belly, they get weaker and fatter…all because they don’t know how to take care of themselves and continue to do stupid things.
Being ‘stupid’ isn’t always about doing the wrong things in the gym, more so about not knowing when to back off and not knowing how to train around the pain and the injuries.
I recently had a conversation with a young weight lifter who injured his rotator cuff while bench pressing. After looking at him and telling him he would need to back off the pressing movements for a couple of weeks, he showed up a week later not being able to move his shoulder at all. He was stupid…a hard worker, but a stupid one. He tried to not only bench again, but he went heavy…all with an inflamed, painful shoulder. Now he could be in serious trouble with his shoulder and will have to miss over a month of training.
Taking care of yourself is not as simple as just taking it easy when you have pain. You have to find out where the pain is coming from and what the problem is in the first place. Only then can you take the right steps to getting better.
I was contacted a few months ago by a 40 year old “regular guy” who liked to lift weights and stay in good condition. He was diagnosed with a torn labrum in his shoulder. He went to therapy, it got somewhat better, and then he injured it again being ‘stupid.’ However, this time his own stupidity was more ignorance over not knowing what to do about it so he could get back to lifting without injuring it again.
Fast forward 3 months later, and he is lifting pain free and stronger then he has ever been before. He found help and he is better now. No surgery, no pain meds. He can bench, pull, and do just about everything now. He got help.
The question for you is simple; “Do you know how to take care of yourself?” “Do you know how NOT to be stupid?”
